Insurance
The Risk Management Unit oversees the procurement and administration of UNSW's commercial insurance program. Detailed information about insurance at UNSW can be found below.
The Insurance Unit is responsible for:
- Arranging the purchase of appropriate insurance cover for the UNSW's assets,
liabilities, etc
- Managing all insurance claims, such as: corporate travel, property damage,
student personal accident, marine cargo, liability etc.
- Attending to all insurance enquiries arising from UNSW activities.
- Ensuring the University's insurance cover is regularly reviewed, to reflect the risk's
inherent in our operations.

The insurance policies are reviewed annually, generally on the 31st of October. Unless stated otherwise UNSW insurance policies apply to The University of New South Wales, in all its functions including controlled entities.

Travel Insurance
UNSW provides travel insurance to staff and students. Please visit the Travel Insurance Guide page to see the details.
Accident/Inpat/Expat Insurance
UNSW provides accidental injury insurance for students who are injured while participating in a UNSW activity. This insurance also extends to staff members of UNSW staff working overseas for longer than 12 months (Expatriates) and for staff who require medical insurance from UNSW due to their visa status (Inbound).
Property Damage
The Risk Management Unit administers claims for damage to UNSW property. All incidents of property damage should be reported Security, Facilities (if building damage) and to the Risk Management Unit.
Shipping & Cargo Insurance
UNSW, if required, can provide insurance for all UNSW owned property which is shipped or transported by commercial carrier. For shipments of amounts above $50,000 in value, please inform the Risk Management Unit officer (02) 9385 1980 with details of the items to be insured, the date of shipment and the name of the carrier.
How to make a claim
As of 31 March 2008, the University has a new Travel, Inbound, Expatriate and Personal Accident insurer, ACE Australia. All claims are administered by our insurer, ACE Australia.
To file a claim:
- Download the correct claim form from the RMU web site.

Letter of Indemnity
UNSW students participating in approved work experience or work placement programs can use this document to show evidence of insurance coverage to their employer. The Letter of Indemnity must be completed by the academic advisor or appropriate School Officer.
