Purchase and collection of remanufactured toner cartridges
Dear TechNet,
Many of you have been longstanding purchasers of remanufactured toner cartridges through the Environment Unit's Green Office Program - for which we say thanks!
You may have seen the item in "news@unsw" a couple weeks ago, indicating that arrangements for the sale and collection of remanufactured toner cartidges have changed. So this email is by way of a reminder of the new procedures.
The Environment Unit, via its Green Office Program, has supplied and collected cartridges across UNSW for over 8 years. In this time customers have had access to a competitively priced, high quality, environmentally preferred product, while knowing their used cartridges were not going to landfill, but being remanufactured and used again and again.
Cartridge resale on campus has been run as an in-house, income-generating small business. While this was innovative in its day, it is now necessary for the Environment Unit to focus on its core business of reducing the University's "ecological footprint".
To maintain the supply and collection of remanufactured cartridges to UNSW customers, alternative ordering and collection provisions have been implemented.
People wishing to order remanufactured toner cartridges can use the main Environment Unit supplier, Protone Imaging, through the Green Office email address gop@unsw.edu.au or phone number (9385 4914). Please note that this email address and phone number will take you directly to the Protone office - these contact details are no longer in use by the Environment Unit.
Protone are providing cartridge collection boxes into which empty laser toner cartridges can be placed. When full, call the number printed on the side of the box for collection and emptying. There have been over 20 boxes already distributed to customers on campus.
In purchasing and returning remanufactured toner cartridges you will help divert some of the 18 million empty cartridges currently going to landfill in Australia every year. Nationwide, only some 30% of cartridges are returned for remanufacture or recycling.
Did you know that:
-
About 3 litres of oil are used to make a laser cartridge;
-
A cartridge can be remanufactured 3 or 4 times, being the best and highest use for this resource;
-
All parts of the cartridge replaced in the remanufacturing process can be recycled;
-
Greenhouse gas emissions are reduced on average by 4.5kg for every laser cartridge remanufactured;
-
Recycling cartridges (such as through Close the Loop) means the cartridge is used just once before being recycled to a lower value product.
