Qantas increases international fuel levies

QANTAS has just announced it will increase its fuel surchages on international flights for tickets issued on or after Thu 09 Aug.

The surcharge on flights from Australia to the UK and Europe will increase $15 to $170, while for mainland USA, Canada, South Africa, South America and India the new levy will be $145, up $12.

Asia-Pacific and Honolulu services will now incur a $105 per sector charge, up from $100 and the surcharge for flights to New Zealand will also increase $5 to $60.

CEO Geoff Dixon said that "Despite our robust fuel hedging policy and surcharges, we are nowhere near recovering the additional cost to our business of the high fuel prices".

He said the carrier had limited the increase to international flights, and there would also be no change to the 500 points Qantas frequent flyer members can use to pay for the taxes, levies and surcharges on their domestic travel.

Dixonsaid Qantas would continue to monitor the oil price and "should the fuel prices drop we will reduce the surcharges, as we have done on two separate occasions in the past 10 months".

He said the price of jet fuel had increased by more than US$17 per barrel since the last adjustment
