Clinical trials

  • Who/what is covered?

UNSW has protection for claims by research subjects seeking compensation for bodily injury arising from the conduct of or involvement in a human clinical trial which has been approved by UNSW’s Ethics Committee. A human clinical trial is defined as any human investigational study conducted for the purposes of research which has been subject to approval by a research ethics committee or similar body.

This policy covers UNSW, employees and any member of UNSW’s Scientific Advisory Board, Medical Advisory Board, Institutional Review Board or Ethics Committee.

UNSW's clinical trials insurance cover comprises a global clinical trials insurance policy. There are a number of local clinical trials insurance policies applicable to countries which will not accept the global policy - "non-admitted countries". If you are undertaking a trial in a non-admitted country, a new local policy will need to be established before the clinical trial commences.

    Do I Need Extra Cover?

Clinical trials are not automatically covered. The spreadsheet below must be completed with the details of the trial, and sent to Insurance, as part of UNSW’s request for coverage to the insurer.

Extra cover will be required if clinical trials are envisaged outside Australia.

Upon specific application, the policy may extend to cover any medical doctor, nurse or dentist solely employed by UNSW or any subcontracted hospital, contract research organisation or any medical research fund involved in a human clinical trial which has been approved by UNSW’s Ethics Committee.

If you become aware of an adverse event arising from a clinical trial, including bodily injury to a research subject, please immediately contact Azita Karpour of Insurance on (02) 9385 1980.

NB: This policy is a claim made policy therefore any knowledge of an event which may give rise to a claim should be reported immediately to the Insurance Team. Failure to do so may limit or negate the insurance protection available to the University.
